Michigan Steelhead and Salmon Fishing

Akin Outfitters guides fly fishing for Great Lakes steelhead and salmon on
Michigan's Muskegon and Pere Marquette Rivers.

It doesn't matter if you've never done this before. Skill level is not a factor. We have very knowledgeable guides who can teach any age or skill level to fly fish successfully and have a great trip. This is a fishing vacation that the entire family will enjoy!

Muskegon River

We fish from Croton Dam to Newaygo. The Muskegon River has large runs of steelhead and salmon. We use jet boats and drift boats to fish the river depending on the time of year and conditions.

Winter Steelhead fishing is from January to March. We fish both spinning or fly fishing during this time. We mainly fish shallow runs and deep holes with bobbers and spawn or flies, whichever you choose to do. This is a great time to fish because there are fewer people out there and the fishing is great!

Spring steelhead fishing usually starts in March and runs through May with mid-April to early May as the peak of the season. The steelhead start to spawn when the water temperatures are right. This is a great time to fly fish because of the number of fish; and you can see the fish you are fishing.

We provide all of the flies and rods. All of our equipment is top-notch, with the majority being Orvis Rods and Ross reels.

Pere Marquette River
(located in Baldwin, Michigan, the Pere Marquette is
Michigan's premier blue ribbon river to fish)

We fish the Pere Marquette River from the world-famous flies-only-water (no kill zone) downstream to Custer depending on where the fish are. In order to put clients on the best fishing, we use 16-foot Hyde Drift boats to fish the Pere Marquette. You will be in and out of the boats to fish so waders are a must. The spring steelhead come in during February and March and start to spawn when the water temperature is right. Late March and mid-April is the peak time. We fish holes and gravel for the steelhead and salmon.

The salmon run starts in late August and goes through October, with peak being mid-September to early October. We begin our season in the lower river chasing fresh-run fish and work our way upstream as the run progresses. The salmon runs on the Pere Marquette are some of the best this side of Alaska! It is not uncommon to hook 20 to 30 fish in a day!
